EHG Middle School students receive farming instruction and agricultural education from a local farmer. Through hands-on experience, adolescents have the opportunity to participate in farming work including planting, harvesting, weeding and cooking using the farm produce. They also complete various building projects to support the farm and schools such as composting systems, benches, tables and other items.
Earth Heart Growers created the most appropriate environment for the teenage stage of life. Our goal with this program is to give our adolescents the opportunity to experience the Erdkinder education, a Montessori approach for teaching adolescents on the farm. Montessori used the term erdkinder (“children of the earth”) to describe adolescents who are preparing to enter the larger, global community. She observed that the sensitive periods of adolescents are in the realms of social, emotional, and physical well being.
A third generation local farmer Joseph Fields provides the agriculture focus. Joseph’s mentorship has inspired organizations such as The Federation of Southern Cooperatives, SAAFON, Clemson University, NRCS, South Carolina State University, Sea Island Farmers Cooperative, Lowcountry Local First and Green Heart. The lead teachers, who also address classes and academic needs, closely follow the agriculture instruction aligned with SC standards.
